Yes.  However, many Java applets are (unfortunately) written to take
advantage of features in the Sun or other proprietary JREs that are not
yet implemetned in the free Java tools.  If you are shooting for maximum
compatibility I would recommend that you download the Sun JRE and use
java-package to create a Debian package you can intstall natively.
