"/dev/hdc" may be owned by "disk."  if that's the case
you could try this:

a.	add yourself to the  "disk"  group,  which may
	pose some sort of  security  risk.  (the  pros  
	should chime in on that.) or

b.	change the ownership of "/dev/hdc" from "disk"
	to "cdrom."
