How to use md5 passwords ?

Hello,

I thought I would use MD5 Passwords because of this line in 
/etc/pam.d/common-passwd:

password   required   pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5

But today I discovered that the format in /etc/shadow is crypt, because it 
is like $1$salt$hash !

What did I do wrong ?
