usb mp3 player not auto-mounting

I'm running 3.1, and my mass-storage device (usb) does not show up in the 
"computer" item on the desktop. However, the device is very specifically 
listed in hardinfo, and correctly.  I installed what packages I could find 
that might make it work, including

usbutils version 0.70-8
usbmount version .10
libusb-0.1-4 version 2:0.1.10-9.sarge.1

any ideas?
