This problem was fixed by swapping the memory in the machine in question, 
deleting the .deb files in the cache and re-downloading. I suspect the poor 
quality memory in the machine was causing apt problems when unpacking 
the .deb files. 

Moral of the story: don't let your boss fill the server up with cheap DIMMs 
he found in his drawer ;-)
