If you don't want to wait for g-s-d to startup on every login, you can
tweak your ~/.Xresources file:
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.dpi: 93
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
Xft.rgba: rgb
These settings correspond to the things you can set via
gnome-control-center. Then read in this file in your ~/.xsession:
xrdb < .Xresources
