I'm using jpilot for my Handspring Visor, but I also use a usb cable without a cradle. Since you dont say exactly what your problem with syncing is, I will point out one thing. Your problem may not be with the selected port (I am using /dev/ttyUSB1). Since You do not have a cradle with a hotsync button on it, you need to use the hotsync application on the PDA to let the device know that it needs to initiate the hotsync. At least, that's the way it works for me.
