Debain is using X version 4. It uses /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, not
/etc/X11/XF86Config.

The recommened command is:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
if you have a problem, read the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file comments!
