You need kernel with usb support.
If you have kernel from Debian distribution, you have kernel modules for 
usb support.
Type as root:
modprobe usbcore
modprobe usb-uhci
modprobe usb-storage
then ypu can mount usb drive like normal hard disk:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
(if you have scsi (or sata) hard disk, it will be sdb1 or something like 
that)
