Try to make it work manually according to PCMCIA-HOWTO, then you will find
whether it works or not.

What you get when running following commands in konsole?

chelcicky:matej$ which startx
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
chelcicky:matej$ dpkg -S $(which startx)
xbase-clients: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
chelcicky:matej$ apt-cache policy xbase-clients
xbase-clients:
  Installed: 6.8.2-10debian1
  Candidate: 6.8.2-10debian1
  Version Table:
 *** 6.8.2-10debian1 0
        500 http://neo.wh-stuttgart.de sarge/xorg Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 0
        500 http://debian.lcs.mit.edu testing/main Packages
     4.1.0-16woody6 0
        500 http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main Packages
chelcicky:matej$

(do the same with /etc/init.d/kdm -- that's what starts KDE).

Good luck!
