Hi Adam,
well if you are using a 2.6 kernel, Debian and others have moved towards
Alsa, thus you should check which alsa modules are loaded. What does
lsmod show? how about a log of alsaconf? alsamixer?

Ps. what software saves you money in particular? have you used the open
source animal shelter software or other related ones. I am wondering
because I have some friends in no-kill shelters in the US of A and
wonder what I could recomment to them.
