"Unknown device" doesn't matter: I receive the same message with a
card that works.

/dev/dsp should be created when loading the snd_pcm_oss module.
Perhaps it isn't being loaded?

However, it looks as if your ICH6 soundcard may not be supported even
in kernel 2.6.11:
