CTRL-ALT-F1 gets you to a console prompt. login as root, then
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86". Then, CTRL-ALT-F7 takes you back
to X. CTRL-ALT-Backspace kills X, and [xkgw]dm should restart it with
the new settings.
