Are you using a newer 80 pin ribbon cable?  That bit be when
moving my Debian install to a new hardrive and case.  I reused
the old 40 pin calbe without realizing it would limit me to
slow transfers.

Also, does your mobo chipset support DMA modes that high?  My
laptop's hardrive reports to hdparm it is capable of UDMA5, but
the chipset on the board (440 BX, it's a very old laptop) will
only set it as high as UDMA2.
