It's been my experience that whenever a device shows up as "Unknown", my 
best solution has been to upgrade my kernel. In your case, if you don't 
want to upgrade your kernel, you might actually need to compile the 
driver using the source provided by the card's manufacturer.

Another option might be to try the tools in nictools-pci (particularly 
the tulip-diag tool).
