mailing list software

Could I have recommendations for mailing list software that I can
install on woody? I'm running a rather ordinary woody system, with
the (I believe) exim that is the default install. I'm looking for
an easy installation and configuration, and reliable operation.
None of my lists will be high volume (maybe one or two messages a month)

I've heard of mailman and majordomo. Are these appropriate? Are there
others I should consider?

I've tried a shortcut -- just editing the /etc/aliases file. This
gives me a way to send stuff to lots of users (twenty is more than
enough for these lists). But it doesn't maintain any archive.

Just sticking a file or directory name into al alias definition doesn't
seem to work.

Using | cat >>/var/mymilarchive seems to give protextion problemd
exim doesn't know what user to use to run tha cat. Presumably
something has to be tweaked in exim's configuration.

There seems no longer to be documentation about the /etc/aliases file format.
What has replaced it? What should I be using instead?
