Have a look at the troubleshooting tip at http://home.comcast.net/
~andrex/Debian-nVidia/troubleshooting.html#nodri.  This is directed at a 
different symptom (no DRI), but your problem may have the same cause, 
i.e. different client and server versions of GLX.
