Check that other programs are not using the sound card and locking it, such
as a sound daemon (esd, arts, etc.). A brute force way to check for this
is lsof | grep /dev/dsp. If that doesn't turn up any offenders, post the
method you're using to try to play sound, and whether you trying to use OSS
or Alsa, etc.
