Silly me. I forgot to add:
- Mobo manufacturer's web site
- Google
- rgrep

If you have an nforce mobo, my first guess would be to use "Alsa
i810 driver" as the basis for my initial Google search.

/usr/src/linux$ rgrep [Nn][Ff][Oo][Rr][Cc][Ee] * | grep audio
drivers/pci/pci.ids: 006b nForce MultiMedia audio [Via VT82C686B]
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: NVIDIA_NFORCE,
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: "NVIDIA nForce Audio",
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: /*@FIXME to be verified*/ { 2,
0x0000 }, /* NVIDIA_NFORCE */
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, NVIDIA_NFORCE},
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, NVIDIA_NFORCE},
sound/oss/i810_audio.c: PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, NVIDIA_NFORCE},
