insmod.old says "I'm not the old version"

Hi
I have two kernel on my compaq, version 2.4.18 et version 2.6.9. With
2.4.18 I have the message "I'm not the old version from insmod.old" at
boot, and no modules are loaded.

/sbin/insmod.old -V give 2.4.15
/sbin/insmod -V give modules-init-tools version 3.00

modutils seems to be installed, dpkg -l|grep modutils gives ii ...

I would still use my 2.4.18 kernel and I would be glad for any
suggestion to correct that situation
