Just had a thought.  If you're selecting individual packages, use the 
"+" on the main keyboard ("<shift>=" not the numeric keypad "+") to 
select the package.

Sorry if my earlier e-mail didn't help, I've used aptitude before but 
didn't choose individual packages on the install.
