Ok, i' root, and i'm using a custom reviewed 2.6.10 kernel.
    
What's a "custom reviewed kernel" mean?  How does it vary from the stock
Debian kernels?  For example, how is its IDE support different?

Can you make DMA work by using a stock Debian kernel?

Good point i've got this with the stock 2.6.10-1-686 kernel.

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   78 MB in  3.12 seconds =  24.96 MB/sec
