How to disable sub-pixel hinting?
After dist-upgrading my system today, something seems to ignore every setting
concerning sub-pixel hinting, leading to horrible, uncontrollable font
rendering with nice colored borders all over the place. I disabled sub-pixel
hinting in both KDE and Gnome control centers and looked through the stuff
in /etc/fonts/conf.d (commenting out sub-pixel.conf didn't change anything,
neither did setting it to "none"). The user's .font.config doesn't show
anything relevant, and inserting something also didn't produce any changes,
even after restarting the X server.
While searching, I found this:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-June/msg05315.html
which seems to describe my situation, but turning EDID off comes with a bunch
of downsides that I originally wanted to avoid with an LCD screen in the
first place.
What do I do to get sane antialiasing back?
