"ulimit -n 48000 for a specific [user] account" revisited

Hi,

I want to raise the nofile-limit for a specific user account.
Editing the /etc/security/limits.conf doesn't show an effect neither in 
the way it is suggested under "man limits.conf" (==> username N48000) 
nor in the way the comments in limits.conf tell (==> username hard|soft 
nofile 48000) .
Do I have to restart something?
