If your system is already running and you have an XDM, GDM, ... session
running you can always press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to the first terminal
window. At which point you can log in and then switch to a different
run-level.

If you reboot your system you can always boot it into single user mode.
This will stop the system from running XDM, GDM, ... session.
