Hi Emma,

what printer driver do you use in CUPS? My guess is that if you install the 
right printer driver in CUPS, your problem will be solved. Try to
locate the right .ppd file and put it into '/usr/share/cups/model/'
(IIRC). Then install a new printer queue and use the proper driver. I
have created pdf posters via latex in this way; the learning curve is
steep, but the output is well worth the effort (at least if you generate
documents on a somewhat regular basis).
