autofs - problem with spaces in username and empty passwords for smbfs

I am trying to use autofs to mount a smb file system where the user has a space
in the username and an empty password. This works fine with mount but fails with
autofs.

The following works:

mount -t smbfs -o username="first last",password= /mnt/shared //smbserver/shared

but having the following line in the autofs file fails (it works for a username
with no space and a non-empty password)

*	-fstype=smbfs,gid=disk,umask=0002,username="first last",password=	://smbserver/&

Any idea what the right syntax is?

Thanks
