texmacs can host "sessions" of octave, maxima, and other things.
It reads the output and formats it in very pretty fonts with lots of
fancy formatting, like a math textbook.
octave itself is a console application, but it can output all kinds of
plots and various output, so you can do graphical things with it but it
doesn't have a GUI of its own.
