Different addresses @ boot time

When my machine boots up for a couple of minutes I can get to the static IP address that I assigned using /etc/network/interfaces. But then after those couple of minutes, the machine appears to broadcast for a DHCP address and gets a totally different address than is in the interfaces file. Why is this happening and how can I ensure that the static address holds?

Thanks for the advice.
