No X with S3 Trio 3D/2X AGP video card

I've been trying for a week or so to get Debian working with my S3
Trio 3D/2X AGP card (I know it's old, but it's what I've got). The
card itself seems to be working, since I can get into text mode with
it, but it seems like it never, ever will bring up X. Any attempts
just get me a black screen, which I can't even get out of with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt+F#.

Things I've tried:
1)dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 followed by dexconf. Several
times, with just about any settings you can think of
    2)xf86config, ditto
3)xf86cfg -- didn't even see the interface, just a black screen
    4)remove and reinstall XFree86 -- no joy

My monitor's an Optiquest Q-71, which is relatively recent, and I've
been doing pretty conservitive Hsync and Vsync values. I've used this
same machine, except for a new hard drive, to run Sarge with no
trouble, but with a new HD and a reinstall, I get nothing!

Does anyone have either any suggestions that I might not have thought
of (I've even tried Ubuntu to see if maybe it had better hardware
detection or something)? Even better, does anyone have a working
XF86Config-4 file with similar hardware?

thanks,
