OK, I was just using jackstart based on my reading of the man page. However
if I try to start jackd itslef, I get this:

stan@yogi:~$ jackd -R -d alsa
jackd 0.99.0
Copyright 2001-2003 Paul Davis and others.
jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details

cannot bind server to socket (Permission denied)
cannot create server sockets
cannot create engine

So, I'm still doing _something_ wrong. Any ideas?
