Dark Command Line

Hey everyone, 

    Please bear with the newbie.

    I recently compiled kernel 2.6 and now during a specific point at startup
(during system messages), my screen goes from a nice and bright black on white
font, to being really dimm and dull.

    This only happens at the command line, when GDM and X kick in, everything
is working just fine.  When I switch to one of the consoles thouh, the
lettering and background is really dark.

     Any ideas as to what could be the problem?  I did not have this problem
prior to compiling the new kernel.
