Either,a) set your 'x-window-manager' alternative (via update-alternatives) to gnome-session (note: someone confirm that this is the correct binary!), a bit flakey since GNOME isn't a window manager exactly b) add gnome-session to your .xsession file at the end (making sure any existing entries are either removed or have a & suffix, indicating they are backgrounded) c) install a display manager such as gdm, which lets you select your environment on login.
