First, thanks for all the information.

Actually, I had artd running on my machine, which was not why kscd did not
output. I tried "direct digital playback" of kscd, it played the music cd,
but with some unbearable click noise, with both arts and alsa.

Then, I tried xmms and it gave me the dialog box to add files everytime
I hit the play button. After googling the problem, I installed xmms-cdread
and it played! I don't have a cd audio cable in my system, which could be
the reason that I need xmms-cdread, not sure.
