There are a couple of other clients for gnome. Balsa and Sylpheed
come to mind (although Sylpheed is not maintained by the gnome
people). I have no experience with Balsa. Sylpheed was nice, but
didn't do what I wanted (I'm kinda picky).
I use evolution for daily needs and mutt for when I'm ssh'd in from
home, and like it very much.
