ok, have checked this again, my mozilla and mozilla-firefoy crash
immediately and without any error message when loading a page with an
applet...

 cat /etc/debian_version
 3.1

 gcc --version
 gcc (GCC) 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-8)

ll /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 39 Feb  6 09:09
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin.so ->
/etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so

ll /etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 62 Feb  6 09:09
/etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so ->
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

ll /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 134116 Feb  6 09:07
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

java -version
java version "1.5.0_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_01-b08)
  Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_01-b08, mixed mode, sharing)

starting e.g. mozilla:
 mozilla http://serios.net/content/applets/viewinfoawt.php
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/bboett/.mozilla/plugins/libNPSVG3.so [libgtksuperwin.so: cannot open shared object file: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libNPSVG3.so [libgtksuperwin.so: cannot open shared object file: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden]
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Exec of "java_vm" failed: 2
<
System error?:: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

** (Gecko:1048): WARNING **: Serious fd usage error 20

** (Gecko:1048): WARNING **: Serious fd usage error 18
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not read ack from browser
System error?:: Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar

with strace i found that there was a missing file ~/.java/properties141
(what's that), creating an empty one relived that error, but didn't
solve the crash....

so what could be done to get this working?
