Installation and hardware recognition

My system (Deb sid) uses a "discover" package to "understand" what HW is 
in the machine and trigger configs.

I read something about stuff called kudzu, anaconda, DraxeX etc etc

Are there main projects related to hw recognition and config. If true 
why Debian chose what it chose ?
