Firstly my thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
While "aptitude's online help is admirably concise, it still helps to
know what to look for.
- "v" is listed under "state flag", and I still need to be told what a
"virtual" state is;
- the meanings of "p" and "i" are fairly clear - even if "i" scores
an entry under both "state" and "action"; and
- as mentioned "A" does not score an entry - which is why I was not
convinced that I was looking in the right place.

So far, so good.
What about "pn "? How can the Desired state be "purge" if the
current status is "not installed"?
I have a clear need to learn the Debian vocabulary.
