the netapplet daemon is started at boot (init in fact) . You can start it
manually :
/etc/init.d/netapplet start
Netapplet menu entry is in Gnome>Other , it s named "Network Selector"
As you see netapplet is non standard , but it s not part of gnome 2.8 either.
