The 'hint' benchmark may be exactly what you seek. It was developed at
the US Dept. of Energy's Ames laboratory.
My experience has been quite good as it clearly identifies the limitations
of first and second level cache size, and allows nice comparisons
between processors.
The original 'hint' code seems to be available from
"http://hint.byu.edu/", and a modified version is at
"http://www.ima.umn.edu/~coult/hint.html". If you have difficulty
locating a copy, contact me for one I have on file.
