Have you just tried loading the b44 module with this command:
#> modprobe b44
If that is not successful, you may have to intall a newer kernel or
compile your kernel again. Which kernel are you using?
IIRC, there is another module available for the broadcom cards. Will dig
out some more info if you show that it is needed.
