I missed the beginning of this thread, sorry. If you installed cups via apt 
(apt-get install cupsys) I think that dpkg-reconfigure cupsys might be what 
you're looking for. If you compiled cups from source w/o the particular 
option you need, I don't see how you could get around a total recompile.
