this is where it fails when booting up, where it often kernel panics:
Calculating module dependencies... Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer
dereference at virtual address 000003e0
*pde = 00000000
EIP: 0010:[<e080da78>] Not tainted
EFLAGS: [hex stuff]
eax: [hex] ebx: [hex] eck: [hex] edx: [hex>
Process depmod.modutils (pid: 146, stackpage=[hex])
Stack: [lots of hex]
Call Trace: [lots of hex]
Code: [hex in pairs]
/etc/rcS.d/S20modutils: line 16: 146 Segmentation fault depmod -a -q
Loading modules: spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
it didn't kernel panic this time, but this looks like what it does when
it _does_ kernel panics.

okay, that was just my fault. loose connection; dunno.
again, i'm at a loss. what's going on?
