OK, I've been through everything I can think of:
boot parameters: acpi=off noapic pci=noacpi pci=biosirq
recompile kernel without any modules, without APIC
module-assistant auto-install nvidia
(kernel already compiled without 4K stacks)
(have not included rivafb)

the nvidia module installs fine but still get a blank screen.

I'm going off the nvidia hardware, my mother also cannot make it work.
Can see a graphics card purchase on the horizon...

Any suggestions in the meantime?
