D'oh! After sending my previous post I got to thinking that my 3D
performance should be better so I ran glxinfo and saw that DRI wasn't
working. Turns out that I didn't have xlibmesa-dri installed. Now I'm
getting a peak 1511 FPS (avg in 900s) glxgears, and tuxracer runs pretty
smoothly.
I still don't think I should be rushing out to buy Doom 3, though.
