Um, you're misunderstanding the whole thing, but you were helped along by a
misleadingly named option.

The difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade is this:  dist-upgrade
automatically tries to resolve problems with dependencies when upgrading
packages.  That is, for instance, it will remove conflicting packages.

That's how dist-upgrade is SUPPOSED to work.

It still upgrades to whatever distro you list in sources.list.
