FWIW I have both xdm and kdm installed and kdm starts in preference.
xdm doesn't start. I tried removing xdm a while ago but aptitude
indicated that other essential things (I can't remember what) would be
removed and so I left it.
Perhaps you need to reinstall xdm and then reconfigure kdm?
