problem with module config

i installed Debian 2.2 and kernel 2.4 on the 1st CD of
Debian 3.0, and compiled the kernel, but can't make
modules work. modprobe complains it can't find the
modules i request.

it seems to me that the cause is different modules
trees, for example:

kernel 2.2:
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net

but with kernel 2.4:
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net

how to make it find those modules?
