tracking memory resource issues

Hi all,
As a longtime Debian user, I really appreciate the community that makes Debian the best. My question: What is the best way to track down a possible memory leak that I have no idea which program is causing it even? Here is the problem: I have a PIII-600 with 256 MB and an ATI Radeon 9000 pro. My memory usage is fairly low when I first bootup and login. The apps that I leave open usually are Mozilla-Thunderbird and Firefox and then I will open other things now and then. I use WindowMaker and GDM, as well. However after a few days to a week the memory usage has gradually climbed to unbearable. Further, even if I close all programs and leave the computer on, the memory usage doesn't drop to what it was when I logged in. How can I trace what software is sucking my memory?

Sincerely,
Brian
