compiling kernel

I'm compiling a new kernel from source (kernel-source-2.6.9) and have
followed the instructions I found at:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-kernel.en.html
(section 7.1.1 - Debian Standard Method)

... yet I keep on getting the following error when I run ...

    kevin@chilk:/usr/src/linux$ fakeroot make-kpkg  kernel_image

<error snip>
/usr/bin/make -f debian/rules INCLUDE_KERNEL_MAKEFILE=yes conf_vars
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.9-2.6.9'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `conf_vars'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.9-2.6.9'
make: *** [conf.vars] Error 2
</error snip>

I've googled for various combinations using "conf_vars" but come up with
very little.

Would appreciate any tips. I've done this successfully before on
different machines, so am befuddled as to why I'm having problems this
time around.

Thanks
Kevin

kevin@chilk:/usr/src/linux$ uname -a
Linux chilk 2.6.7-1-386 #1 Thu Jul 8 05:08:04 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
Running unstable

Also 1 more quick question: I'm using gcc-3.3 yet the kernel docs
suggest using gcc-2.95. Is that dated info or is it still a good idea
to use 2.95?
